For those who could get past the initial shock over the performance of Tom Watson over the weekend at the British Open, their attention spans were then turned to another intriguing topic.
And that topic was Tiger Woods. Then again, what’s new? Tiger has always been the main subject when it comes to pro golf, and had it not been for Watson’s weekend for the ages (literally), more time would have been spent on the monumental occurrence that was Tiger missing the cut at Turnberry.
But seriously, Tiger Woods missing a cut? Words you never probably thought you would see in the same sentence, though he has missed a few cuts before. This far into his career though, did you ever really think you’d see Tiger sitting at home as weekend play was underway? I know that thought didn’t cross my mind for one minute. Not even a millisecond.
So now the questions start to arise. People are questioning the knee. People are questioning the swing mechanics and Tiger’s adjustment after the injury. These are fair observations, as there is no doubt some difference in his game, especially in the way he uses his body to swing the club.
But let’s relax. This is still the best player on the planet we are talking about here. Ok, so he missed a cut at a major. It’s not the end of the world for Tiger. He’s still the favorite heading into the PGA Championship at Hazeltine, and he’s still the number one ranked player in the world. He’ll bounce back.
Perhaps we had too high of expectations for him when he came back from the knee injury. I’m sure some were disappointed when he didn’t win the Masters. More were disappointed when he didn’t win the U.S. Open. Disappointment levels reached even higher after this weekend.
We’ve gotta remember just how long he was out though. He wasn’t gone for just a few weeks. He was gone for many months. Any other golfer takes that amount of time off, and he’s gonna be struggling for a while on the course. I can guarantee you that. It’s just not an easy task coming right back and wiping out all the competition.
Even saying that, the guy has still won three tournaments since returning. Most guys on the tour would take one tournament win. See Bo Van Pelt‘s win at the US Bank Championship this past weekend.
I know, I know. This is Tiger we’re talking about here. Tiger freakin’ Woods! He should never lose a tournament!
But as we saw this past weekend, Tiger is human. The consistency just isn’t there right now. He’s still trying to get that groove back. And in time, he will.
After all…..he’s Tiger Woods.
