The three big tournaments for the week have kicked off today, with some interesting stories thus far.
At the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, there aren’t exactly household names topping the leaderboard after the first round of the tournament.
Steve Lowery shot a 63 to start off 9-under par, while John Senden is 8 under, and four guys ( Y.E. Yang, James Nitties, Vaughn Taylor, and Brian Vranesh) all shot 65 to stand two shots off the lead.
Meanwhile, Tiger Woods is currently tied for 95th after shooting a 1-under 71 for today’s round.
Rory Sabbatini -5 (67)
Woody Austin -4 (68)
Rocco Mediate -4 (68)
Jim Furyk -3 (69)
John Daly +4 (76)
At the Senior U.S. Open, there is a four way tie at the top at the end of the first round, with Greg Norman among the leaders. Norman shot a 66, as did Dan Forsman, Joey Sindelar, and Tim Jackson (a) to go to 6-under for the championship.
Andy Bean -5 (67)
Loren Roberts -4 (68)
Fred Funk -4 (68)
Mark O’Meara -2 (70)
Tom Watson -1 (71)
Bernhard Langer +1 (73)
And at the Women’s British Open, Sandra Gal shot a 3-under 69 in windy conditions to take a one shot lead over Angela Stanford and Song-Hee Kim.
Michelle Wie is in the mix, shooting a 73, which isn’t a bad score considering that she is currently tied for seventh. Christina Kim also shot 1 over for the day.
Paula Creamer +2 (74)
Lorena Ochoa +3 (75)
Ai Miyazato +3 (75)
Cristie Kerr +4 (76)
Morgan Pressel +5 (77)
Natalie Gulbis +7 (79)
Good to see Norman playing well again this week after a bad finish last week at Sunningdale. And hopefully Tiger can get things turned around tomorrow and shoot towards the top of the leaderboard.
And wow, was it windy today at the Women’s British Open. I watched the coverage this morning and it seemed like balls were just hanging in the air forever. I’d like to see Wie play well tomorrow so that she can be in contention this weekend.
