With the television coverage about to get started on TNT in about a half hour, I wanted to give everyone an update as to what has taken place at Hazeltine today.
AS OF 1:25 ET:
Tiger Woods is tied atop the leaderboard at 4-under par with Robert Allenby, Alvaro Quiros, and Michael Bradley.
No surprise that Tiger is at the top of the leaderboard, though it is a little surprising to see him there this quickly. Usually it takes him a round or two to get going, but obviously not the case today.
He’s playing well, and I guess we’ll wait and see if he decides to run away with this tournament.
But keep in mind, half the guys haven’t even hit the tees yet.
One of my sleeper picks, Hunter Mahan, is at 3-under. As is Padraig Harrington and a couple of other guys.
Head over to Golf.com for the complete leaderboard.
Other quick notes:
- Rory McIllroy is playing extremely well right now, sitting at 1-under par for the championship. He’s through 16 holes thus far, and it would be nice to see him contend heading into the weekend. It would be a great story.
- My pick to win, Kenny Perry, isn’t off to a fast start, but it’s early. He’s currently at 2-over par through 15 holes, and six shots back of the lead. I guess that’s what happens when you pick against Tiger.
- Paul Casey did withdraw from the tournament with a rib injury. He suffered the injury last week at the Bridgestone Invitational, and though he said he would try to play through it, it obviously was hurting too bad to try and get out there and give it a shot.
That’s all for now. Be back later with thoughts on the first round of action at Hazeltine.
