U.S. Wins the 2009 Solheim Cup
After an exciting and golf-filled three days in Chicago, the United States has defeated the Europeans to win the Solheim Cup, by a final score of 16-12.
Morgan Pressel was the one who officially locked down the cup for the United States, as she won her match with Anna Nordqvist 3 & 2 which sealed it for the ladies from America.
One of the big stories of the day without question was the play of Michelle Wie. She started off the day on a hot streak, and eventually settled for a 1 up win over the veteran Helen Alfredsson.
Aside from the spectacular play this week, it was good to see Wie finally open up and show off a less-serious side, and just have some flat out fun. I hope she’ll stay in that mode because it seems to fuel her play much better than the always serious approach.
Here’s the final match-by-match results:
(US) Paula Creamer over Suzann Pettersen 3 &2
(US) Angela Stanford over Becky Brewerton 5 &4
(US) Michelle Wie over Helen Alfredsson 1 UP
Laura Davies and Brittany Lang – Halved
Gwladys Nocera and Juli Inkster - Halved
(EUR) Catriona Matthew over Kristy McPherson 3 &2
(US) Brittany Lincicome over Sophie Gustafson 3 &2
(EUR) Diana Luna over Nicole Castrale 3 &2
(US) Christina Kim over Tania Elosegui 2 UP
Maria Hjorth and Cristie Kerr - Halved
(US) Morgan Pressel over Anna Nordqvist 3 &2
Janice Moodie and Natalie Gulbis - Halved
Even if you don’t follow women’s golf on a regular basis, you should have been watching this tournament. This was the kind of excitement that the LPGA needs on a week-to-week basis.
The players were pumped. The fans were pumped. All in all, it was just a great atmosphere for golf, and why not let the players have this type of enthusiasm and interaction with fans every week? I think it would be great for the women’s game.
Will it happen? Who knows. I don’t expect everyone to be jumping around and waving flags every week. But it just looked like the players were having fun. They were competitive, but still had a great time interacting with each other.
And that’s what the game is all about, isn’t it?
Congrats to the U.S. team on another big Solheim Cup victory!
