Three Sleeper Picks for the Deutsche Bank Championship

Posted by: Blake Lovell

A little off the routine this week, since the Deutsche Bank Championship doesn’t get started until Friday. Normally we do predictions every Wednesday morning, but we’ll push that back to tomorrow.

Today though, I want to offer up my opinion on a few of the sleeper picks to watch for this week at TPC Boston.

Without further ado, here they are:

1. Zach Johnson

Chances are, if you watched the Barclays this past weekend, you saw a lot of Zach Johnson. Why? Because he was paired with Tiger Woods every single day of the tournament. To some, that would be a very intimidating experience. But Johnson did fairly well, finishing tied for 28th, and at even par on the tournament.

And yes, I realize Johnson is fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, but there are many other guys who will be favorites ahead of him at the Deutsche Bank. The current betting odds have both Johnson and Camilo Villegas at 50/1. There are ten guys in front of them, including Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els, Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson Vijay Singh, and Jim Furyk. So he’ll likely slide down in the minds of the people, which is why I will classify him a sleeper pick just for this week.

2. Justin Leonard

Leonard has been sort of quite lately, as he finished tied for 31st last week at the Barclays. He didn’t have much success before that either, shooting 11-over at the PGA, and 4-over at the Bridgestone. However, we all know this guy has the skill to compete week in and week out with the greatest players in the world.

He’s got five top 10’s so far this season, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him be towards the top of the leaderboard this week. If he can keep the ball in the fairway, and at least give himself a shot by hitting greens-in-regulation, his putting can make him a serious threat this week.

3. Nick Watney

Watney played some great golf last week at Liberty National, finishing tied for 6th. And given the guys towards the top at the end of the tournament, that’s a pretty good accomplishment if you ask me. He was playing extremely well towards the start of the season, and last week’s finish may give him some confidence this week, and give him a shot at the victory.

The guy can hammer the ball off the tee, but accuracy has been an issue at times, so he’ll need to focus on that this week in order to be successful. I’ve just kind of got a feeling about Watney this week, so hopefully he’ll hit the ball straight enough to have a chance going into the weekend. I’m predicting a top 10 finish this week.

Honorable Mention: Fredrik Jacobson, Anthony Kim, Brandt Snedeker

Here’s a nice little breakdown of this week’s field over at PGATour.com.

I’d love to hear who you think will be some of the sleeper picks this week. So feel free to comment below!

Everyone have a great day!
