Well ladies and gentlemen, the Tour Championship will be getting underway next week, which will mark the end of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Some of you may like that, others may not. But we will have a FedEx Cup champion after the tournament at East Lake next weekend, as for who that will be…..that remains to be seen.
I would say that up until today, there are two strong contenders for player of the year in the PGA. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that I’m talking about Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. Most seem to think that the tournament next weekend will decide who wins that award, and I sort of have to agree there.
If Stricker somehow wins another tournament in which Tiger finishes in the top five, he has to be your player of the year. He’s had a very solid year up until this point, probably his best of his career.
On the other hand, Tiger is…well…..Tiger. He’s won his fair share of tournaments, but not any major championships. Stricker hasn’t won a major either, but the expectations weren’t as high for him.
So my question to you is this: if the season ended today, who would you vote as player of the year?
Let’s base this simply on the body of work for both thus far this season, not on what could potentially happen next Sunday in Atlanta. I know that most people will say that next week’s winner (if it’s Woods or Stricker) will lock up the award. But let’s just hypothetically say the season is over today. Who would win?
I would still have to go with Tiger. Who would you take?
