Phil Mickelson is Back!

by FedEx Cup Playoffs

We all thought Kenny Perry would be the feel good story today if he could hold off Tiger Woods at the Tour Championship. Someone did hold off Tiger, but it wasn’t Perry. It was Phil Mickelson.

Mickelson, after being over par for the tournament after round one, finished at 9-under for the championship, three shots ahead of Tiger. I said in my predictions this week that I just hoped Phil would be in contention on Sunday, and he did me one better. He won the whole thing.

You can view the final leaderboard over at Golf.com.

Even if you’re a Tiger fan, you’ve gotta appreciate the victory by Mickelson today. After all that he’s been through this year, it was a great way to cap off the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Speaking of the FedEx Cup, Tiger, of course, won the playoffs and will take home the $10 million check. I’m sure he would have liked to win the tournament outright, but he’ll probably take that check anyways.

Perry ended shooting a 74 today, which took him completely out of contention, given the fact that Mickelson had the day that he day. If Perry didn’t win, I was rooting for Mickelson. So it all worked out in the end. Hopefully Phil can build off of this victory, and carry a little momentum into the Presidents Cup.

It was another great weekend of golf, and it ended with the two best players in the world winning on a Sunday.

Have a great night everyone!

Totally agree, Andy! I would love to see the two paired together, though I'm sure it would draw plenty of criticism from some people after the last time that happened. I think that while we all enjoy Tiger rolling up on everyone, I think we also like to see someone be that guy who's going to challenge him every now and then. Paddy has been that guy for the latter part of the year, but I hope Phil can get back to being that guy on a full-time basis. I'm pumped up for the Presidents Cup. It should be exciting!

Phil Mickelson sure is back! And back at just the right time. And if anything, it bodes well, really well for the United States team in the Presidents Cup and also send out a direct messafe to Mr Couples. He needs to pair those two great men together! There is no better scenario than your two best players engaging in a last-day duel, and then both coming out clutching a prize. Even better, if the two of them are made to play at the same time, working as a team, each shot, each hole, each gallery gathering. Good for the game, better for the fans, terrific for the broadcasters. What’s more, both of them have been tremendous stories of the season. There is no simply no smarter way to sell your product than have it marketed by those who bring in the green stuff. There’s a reason Shaq’s name has been put next to LeBron’s by the Cavaliers. As far as the fortunes of the American team on the golf course are concerned, the pairing might work superbly or fail completely miserably, but it is one that will get the most eyeballs and the biggest headlines. It’s definitely worth another look despite the 2004 memory. And of course, the vibes between Phil and Steve Williams might just add to all the drama.

Definitely rooting for the Americans. Not sure about Rory. He's had a pretty decent year thus far, and we all know it's only going to get better from here for him.

Should be exciting stuff. Wonder how Rory is doing? Rooting for the Americans?

I'd say Tiger won't mind that $10 million check. And definitely glad that Phil got the victory. Now I'm ready to see the two team at the Presidents Cup!

Good for Phil. For Tiger the $10 million from the FedEx Cup makes up for the zero majors in 2009 right?
