2009 FedEx Cup Playoffs: Success or Failure?

Now that the FedEx Cup playoffs have come and gone, it’s time to look back and decide whether or not it was a success.

I would have to say that despite some of the negativity coming in about the format and other things of that nature, this year’s FedEx Cup would have to be considered a success. Most of the tournaments were exciting, and the only real surprise of the whole thing was Heath Slocum winning The Barclays.

The PGA made the tweaks that they had to make in order to make things run a little more smoothly, though it would have been a little more confusing had Tiger Woods completely bombed at the Tour Championship.

All in all though, it worked out, and Phil Mickelson winning yesterday ended everything on a good note. There will still need to be changes made, but I thought it turned out a lot better than I thought it would.

What did you think of this year’s installment of golf’s playoffs? Did you like it? Or is the format still too messed up to care?

Hey Blake, nice reading some of your stuff. I am also a golf addict and I’m looking forward in sharing your thoughts over the the upcoming season.

I personally did not like the format of the playoffs. The fact that only one out of the top 5 could win it this year makes the the Tour Championship a bit of a joke and takes all the flavour away. What do you think??

    Emile,

Thanks for the kind words! We’ll definitely have fun talking some golf.

As for the format, it was still too confusing in my opinion. I think the PGA came out looking better than they should have, simply because things seemed to fall in place. Tiger played well in every tournament, which didn’t bring in all of those scenarios that could have occurred had Tiger played terrible towards the end.

And the tournaments were at least exciting, which also helped them out. It was certainly an improvement over last year’s awful format, but there’s still a lot of things that need to be worked out. We’ll see what kind of changes they make going into next season.

    Blake,

This year was a crazy year of golf and like you said it was pure luck that the PGA got a photo finish like that. However, if they wanna call it the playoffs I really think they should make it like a “real” playoff event. If you compare it to any major sporting playoff this is the worst format. Usually the winner takes all, whereas here it seems like the winner “maybe’ takes all. I think it’s ridiculous for someone who made it to the Tour Championship and salvaged a place in the top 30 to feel like they have virtually no chance to win the Fedex Cup. For instance, a guy like Ernie Els in 28th place on the Cup standings must have believed he had no chance to win the Cup with Tiger Woods having to basically finish in last place to give him any chance. Now I ask myself is that really a playoff?? I personally think that the PGA should give every player a chance to win the Fedex Cup that plays in that last tournament . This way players will learn when to peak at the right time and it will also make that last tournament a nail biter.
