With all the hype heading into the Farmers Insurance Open being focused on the return of Phil Mickelson to the course for the first time in 2010, we should have known that someone would fly in under the radar and take the lead after day one at Torrey Pines. And that person was Scott Piercy.
Piercy shot a 8-under 64 yesterday, and has a one-shot lead heading into second round action today. Ben Crane, Chris Tidland, Ryuji Imada, and Matt Every are all one shot back at 7-under for the tournament.
Speaking of Mickelson, he finished at 2-under on the day, and is certainly still in contention heading into the weekend. It would be nice to see Phil get it going the next few days, and at least get within a shot or two of the lead heading into the final round on Sunday. I think it might take him a tournament or two to get completely back into the flow of things, but once he does, watch out. He’s going to have a big year.
With a lot of guys within a few shots of the lead after day one, it should be exciting to see who separates themselves from the rest of the pack today. As we know, tournaments at Torrey Pines always seem to be close the entire way, so be sure to tune into all the action taking place in San Diego the next few days.
