We knew it had to happen soon enough. But yes ladies and gentlemen, Ian Poulter has his first official win in the United States of America, as he knocked off Paul Casey today in the Accenture Match Play final.
Poulter got off to a hot start, and eventually went on to win the match 4 & 2. Heading into the final, Casey had to be considered the favorite, since he had pretty much been steamrolling the competition up until that point. But it was all Poulter in the final, and it was about time that we saw him pick up a victory in the states.
He may rub some people the wrong way, as some may not like his outgoing style and nature, but the sky is the limit for this guy. Poulter has grown on me over the last year or so, as I was one of those people who really didn’t like the guy when I first began following him on a regular basis. But he’s a gritty player, and with that kind of style, he’s always going to have a chance to win big tournaments.
I said before this season started that this could be a breakout year for Poulter, and that he could pick up a major championship in the process. Looks like he’s off to a good start, so maybe my prediction will turn out to be true. Only time will tell.
Congrats to Poulter on the victory, and congrats to Casey on what was really a great week for him, despite the loss in the final.
