Everyone knew he had it in him. Most had been predicting that Camilo Villegas would have a breakout year for several years now. But now, it looks like he could be on the verge of his biggest season ever.
I’ve always thought Villegas had the game to get it done. Has Tiger Woods been the problem? I don’t think so. I think it’s more about just simply playing well this season than it is about Tiger being absent from the field. Villegas drives the ball well, but his putting has been the difference so far in 2010.
With the five-stroke win over Anthony Kim at the Honda Classic yesterday, Villegas is clearly proving that he can make the big shots when he needs to. He simply left everyone behind at the Honda, and might be trying to do the same this season. He played well at Match Play a few weeks ago, and may be in the category of “Breakout Players in 2010.”
We’ll see where he goes from here, but it looks like Villegas is trying to make a statement early on in this PGA Tour season, and if he continues to play like this, he might add a major or two to his resume this season.
