Jim Furyk Wins the Transitions Championship

So it seems like every time that we get excited about a golf tournament (star-studded field, good golf course was the case this week at Innisbrook), there’s always a Tiger alert. But now that you’ve heard and probably seen the Tiger interviews on ESPN and Golf Channel, let’s talk about the play on the course this weekend, which saw Jim Furyk picking up the big victory at the Transitions Championship.

Of course, for most of the week, the talk was about Padraig Harrington, who seemed to be well on his way to picking up his first victory in…..well…..a while. That was not to be though, as Harrington shot a 72 in the third round, while Furyk made his charge to the top of the leaderboard with a 67. Paddy shot a 72 today as well, finishing tied for 8th at 6-under par for the championship.

Meanwhile, Furyk did what he had to do to win the tournament. Having a three-shot lead entering play today, he at least gave himself a little cushion to make a few mistakes. Eventually, he finished at 13-under par for the tournament, and a 69 on the final round. K.J. Choi finished one shot back after shooting a 67 on the day, while Bubba Watson finished two shots back at 11-under par.

All in all, it was good to see Furyk pick up the win, as he’s certainly one of my favorites on the tour. He had his ups and downs last season, but the is as solid as they come in terms of consistency, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see him have a few more wins this season. Yes, I know Tiger is coming back, but Furyk is the kind of guy who just plays golf, and is so experienced that he could definitely be one of the players to continue to thrive this season.

A good tournament this week, and now the players get ready for the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, which is always an exciting week. There’s no Tiger, but that means that someone else will have to step up and play some great golf, and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out with the victory.

Congrats to Furyk on his 14th victory on tour, and I would venture to say that he will add to the total before this year is over.
