It’s been a while since we’ve seen Adam Scott in contention on Sunday. Actually, it’s been a while since we’ve seen Scott even play close to his best golf. But nonetheless, after a very forgetful 2009 season, Scott made his resurgence be known today, as he held off Fredrik Jacobson by a shot to win the Valero Texas Open.
There’s no doubt that the potential has always been there. We all saw that when Scott moved as high as third in the world rankings. The guy can play some golf. But last year sort of made everyone question whether his head was right, as he completely fell off the face of the golfing world, and struggled to even get close to playing good golf. He started to improve towards the end of 2009, however, as he made an appearance in the Presidents Cup, and things seem to start heading back in the right direction.
That direction was officially found today, as this win should increase his confidence by, well, about a billion percent. Although this wasn’t a tournament filled with a lot of the top players in the world, in golf, it simply doesn’t matter who is in the field sometimes. It’s just that you know that you’re playing some of your best golf, and you managed to beat the rest of the guys who were in the field. Some might consider this a throwaway win since the Valero isn’t one of the big tournaments on the PGA schedule, but for Scott, this could be the win that gets him going again.
I hope that he can build off of this success, and continue to play well throughout the rest of 2010. At this point, he has to start being in the discussion once again for possible sleepers to win a major championship. Places like Pebble Beach and St. Andrews will set up well for him, as long as he’s got the putter working.
It’ll be interesting to see where Scott goes from here and whether or not he can keep this momentum in the near future, and possibly make a statement of his official return to golf’s elite with a victory at a major championship this year.
