Shooting under 60 doesn’t happen very often in the world of golf. But Carl Pettersson almost did just that in today’s third round of the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately though, Pettersson missed a lengthy birdie putt on the final hole to settle for a 60 on the day, which is a Canadian Open record. 59, 60, eh who’s counting? It’s still about 40 strokes better than I shoot.
After picking up an early bogey on the second hole, Pettersson then picked up seven birdies and two eagles on the round, to give him a great shot at shooting in the 50s. Of course, right now he’s probably kicking himself about that birdie on number two. But he could probably say that about a lot of different shots in his round. A few made putts here or there, and he could have picked up another birdie or two, and broke 60. That’s golf though.
As you would expect, Pettersson’s brilliant round has put him at the top of the leaderboard as third round play continues. Tim Clark is also at the top of the leaderboard along with him, but Clark is only through six holes on the day thus far.
There are still plenty of golfers on the course, who knows where Pettersson will be once the round is complete, but I would guess that he’ll still be right up there. We probably shouldn’t expect anyone else to shoot a 60 today, so it’s safe to say that Pettersson will be in contention in the final round tomorrow.
