Carl Pettersson Wins the RBC Canadian Open

After getting robbed on a putt on 18 Friday that would have given him an incredible round of 59, it only seemed fitting that Carl Pettersson would go on to win this year’s RBC Canadian Open. Pettersen did just that today with a final round 67 to hold off Dean Wilson, who entered the day with a four-shot lead.

Although he started off the week with 71 in the first round (which was high considering the other scores out there), the 60 that Pettersson shot in round three undoubtedly gave him the opportunity that he needed to pick up this victory. And after starting off the final round with 2 bogeys through the first seven holes, he answered back with six birdies in the next eight holes to get back atop the leaderboard, and secure his spot as the winner of this tournament.

Of course, it also helped that the four-shot leader entering the round didn’t have such a great day. Wilson couldn’t find the birdies that he needed today, and the bogeys on 12 and 14 hurt his chances to overtake Pettersson and win. This one will certainly sting for a while for Wilson, as he was playing on a sponsor’s exemption and has only won once in his PGA Tour career. He certainly put himself in a great position to win, but just couldn’t make the shots today.

He had the four-stoke advantage entering the final 18, but it simply just wasn’t to be. Some might say that he gave away the tournament. I would argue though that Pettersson’s play on the back nine was the difference, as he made some key shots down the stretch.

For Pettersson, it’s his fourth PGA tour win in his career, and definitely a well-deserved one. After the round that he had yesterday, it was nice to see him back it up with yet another solid round today. Had he not won the event, we would have all probably forgot about that 60 that he shot. But now, it will be a huge part of this memorable win for him.

Congrats to Pettersson on the victory!
