With the final major of the year less than 24 hours away, I find myself struggling to make a decision of who to pick as my favorites for the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. On some levels, my Tiger Woods fandom tells me he knows how big this tournament is in respect to his Ryder Cup status and perhaps his Fed Ex Cup point standings. But on the other hand, Tiger is a head case right now and I don’t know what to expect anymore.
So without further delay, here are my picks for the 92nd PGA Championship:
Rory McIlroy- Like I said in my predictions last week, McIlroy seems to step it up on the big stage. This Pete Dye design links style course is crafted after some of the classic courses in his home land of Ireland. I think we could see another first time winner this week with Rory holding up the Wanamaker Trophy come Sunday evening.
Steve Stricker- Stricker has not fared well this year in the majors. But this time it’s different. Stricker is at home in Wisconsin and the fans love him. He hits it straight and if his putter is on this week this could be the week Stricker breaks through for a major win. He will feed off the fan emotion and this could help carry him to the top of the leaderboard this week.
Ernie Els- The big easy is leading the Fed Ex Cup points standings and with two wins this year could be poised to turn a good year into a great year with a PGA Championship victory.
Tiger Woods- The decision has been made. I cannot bet against this guy. He flew straight to Wisconsin after the Bridgestone Invitational so not going home first may have kept his mind clear of the distractions down in Florida. He has been able to practice since Monday and has been working on his swing all week. All it takes is a little tweak and he can find lightning in a bottle this week. He knows how big this tournament is and I think we will see Tiger step his game up.
Well that’s it folks. Leave your own comments and predictions and we will see who is actually holding the trophy on Sunday.
