Well my friends, golf season has finally arrived! The Hyundai Tournament of Champions gets underway tomorrow at Kapalua with a strong field ready to get this new year started on a good note. While we won’t see the likes of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson just yet, the HTOC should be a very exciting event in what should be a very exciting year for professional golf.
2010 PGA Tour Player of the Year, Jim Furyk, will be participating in this event and will be looking to pick up where he left off last season. Furyk bounced back after a tough ’09 and took home the FedEx Cup trophy to go along with his Player of the Year award on tour. It was great to see Furyk have such a successful season, and there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll have another year on your this upcoming season.
Others like Ernie Els, Steve Stricker, Matt Kuchar, Graeme McDowell, and Adam Scott are also in the field this week, and will also be looking to build off of success last season. There’s a reason why this is a tournament of champions. The field is just absolutely loaded, which means that it’ll be intriguing to see who sets themselves apart from the pack early on.
While a lot of people’s attention will be on the NFL playoffs and the upcoming college football national championship, there’s always some excitement in the air when golf season gets started. That’s especially true for the players, who would obviously much rather start off on a strong note than develop some bad habits, and then have to fix the next month or so trying to fix them.
This is the perfect time for newcomers to start learning what it takes to be a winner on tour, and it’s the perfect time for veterans to hit their stride in order to try and build some momentum for the year’s first major in April at Augusta.
So golf fans, rejoice. There’s no crazy Tiger stories hogging all the attention at the opening of the season this year, so we don’t have to worry about that.
A new season is here, and new storylines will begin to build starting with this week. It should be a fun week of action at Kapalua!
