Zach Johnson: On The Ryder Cup Bubble

Cedar Rapids golfer and 2007 Masters Champion Zach Johnson is hoping his home course at The John Deere Classic will provide a setting that will aid him in securing a spot in this year’s Ryder Cup. Actually Zach is from up the road a little, but Silvis is close enough to call home.

The 36 year old golfer is currently sitting at eighth position on the Ryder Cup points list. That is the last position to recieve an automatic bid, and a trip to Medina in September. The remaining positions are determined by Captain Davis Love III’s selection in early September. Based on the season Johnson is having, I’m not convinced he would be high on the Captains list.

A victory at The John Deere Classic would push him up the list, and give him a little breathing room. He is currently only 25,000 points ahead of 9th place Keegan Bradley, and 150,000 points ahead of 10th place Rickie Fowler. Bradley has been known to get hot later in the season, so could pose a threat to Johnson’s position. He has played well in International competition, but there are some pretty fair golfers behind him, such as Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and even The Captain himself.

Johnson has made a little over $3,000,000 this year, and made 15 of 17 cuts in tournaments where he has competed. He has one win on the season at the Colonial, in Ft Worth, to go with a second place finish at the RBC Heritage. He had a T-8 at the Humana, and the rest of his finishes on the season have been outside of the top 10.

The Ryder Cup begins activity on Saturday September 22nd at Medina Country Club in Medina Illinois, with tee times starting at 7AM on Friday September 28th, with foursomes. The afternoon session will be Fourballs. The festivities will wind down on Sunday with Singles action.

Current leaders in the Ryder Cup Standings from the USA are Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, Tiger Woods, Webb Simpson, Phil Mickelson, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan and Zack Johnson.

Team Europe leaders at this time are Rory McIlroy, Paul Lawrie, Justin Rose, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and Martin Kaymer. The team Captain for Team Europe is Jose Maria Olazabal.
