What is there to be said about Rory McIlroy’s weekend?
Terrible? Awful? Disappointing? All three, and a slue of other endearing adjectives maybe placed.
McIlory entered the tournament as the headline. He had just signed with Nike, he was playing with Tiger Woods (someone he filmed a commercial with that was released just days prior), he was number one in the world, and people simply wanted to see him. However, it was not his play that was getting him attention Thursday night and Friday morning. It was his clubs.
He was using Nike clubs for the first time this weekend. It was an experiment that failed, but will surely be retried until it works. Rory did switch his putter Friday, a move that he was questioned about but refused to answer the night before. It was a change that he decided to make just for the weekend, as he finished his first day at 3. The switch did not work well at all, as he continued to struggle with a second 3 that landed him well out of the running for the cut.
I was surprised when he decided to change his putter. I did not think that it was his short game that was his trouble. I felt that his tee shots were way more poor than his game on the green. I think that was proven by his follow up performance Friday.
But again, Abu Dhabi was not a must win for anybody, and thus he will take it down as first of the year jitters and being out of sink. I think it would be a safe bet to assume that he will rebound in the near future.
