2o14 Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson held a press conference on Wednesday morning announcing changes to the selection format. He had decided to let one additional player to play his way into the lineup rather than being a captains pick. Watson is giving one of his picks back, leaving him with three selections instead of four.
The 2014 Ryder Cup will get underway on September 26 at the Gleneagles Hotel, in Perthshire, Scotland. This will be Tom’s second Ryder Cup, and he will be tasked with building a team that can compete, and hopefully bring the cup back to the US. Watson’s success in Scotland as both a player, and ambassador to golf had to be a huge factor in his selection.
By leaving the selection of the extra player to fate, he will be getting an extra player who is hopefully playing well enough to have played himself into the lineup, instead of being picked by a Captain. Paul Azinger was the captain who increased the Captains Pick to four at Valhalla in 2006.
Watson has indicated the players would have a little more ownership of this event, and he wants do everything possible in order to give them the best opportunity to win. When asked by The Golf Channel how he would be able to connect, and relate to the younger players, and he said he had already started. He’s learning to Tweet. He said, the younger players all communicate on Twitter, and he figured he should learn.
He must be doing something right, he already has 15,000 followers, and the number is growing. By the time the Ryder Cup tees off, should be an expert. His confirmed handle is:
