The Rolex number one player on the LPGA Tour, Stacy Lewis had a rough start at The Kraft Nabisco Championship on Thursday afternoon. She would end up shooting one over par on the day after an auspicious start, but just appeared to be uncomfortable through the entirety of her round. I’m not sure if she was in pain from her recent back problems, or was feeling the pressure of her new number one status.
Lewis began her day on the back nine in the morning session at The Dinah Shore Tournament Course, and hit her tee shot into the water hazard at the 145 yard par three hole. Her third shot from the drop zone came up well short, and when the dust settled, she found herself at +3 over par. She would spend the remainder of her round digging herself out of the hole.
Stacy got a birdie before the turn at 17th hole, but quickly gave it back at the first with another bogey. She picked up birdies at the second and fourth holes before parring out and carding a 73 on the par 72 golf course.
Na Yeon Choi, and Suzann Pettersen both carded opening round -4 under 68’s to claim the early clubhouse lead. The afternoon players will have to face the afternoon winds that are expected to climb in the 10-15 mile per hour range, and the arid conditions at Rancho Mirage should quicken the pace on the already fast greens.
