2013 Golf: LPGA Returns to North Texas After 20 Year Absence

It’s been over two decades, but the LPGA returns to the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex for The North Texas LPGA Shootout this week. This is an inaugural event, and one of three unique events added to the LPGA schedule in 2013. The Shootout will feature 144 players, and four days of competition that will be a little different from the norm.

The tournament which will be played over four days will offer a purse of $1.3 Million dollars, and the opportunity for High School golfers, as well as collegiate golfers a chance to qualify for the field. The Las Colinas Country Club will host the tournament, and will feature a twist in the format to introduce a shootout style.

The “Shoot Out” style will feature two cuts.  The first will be made after the second round to the top-70 and ties, and the second cut will be made to the top-50 and ties after the third round on Saturday.

The tournament also provided a unique opportunity for amateur players to earn spots in the field through a qualifying “Collegiate Shootout” in mid-March. Tournament exemptions in the Collegiate Shootout were awarded to Madison Pressel of the University of Texas and Casey Grice of the University of North Carolina after each carding an even-par 71.

Monday also features a High School Shootout, where two local high school players will qualify for spots in the tournament.

Rolex ranked number two player, Stacy Lewis leads a home-state contingent who will participate in this event that will  include Angela Stanford and Gerina Piller. Stanford is ranked 18th, and went to college at nearby TCU. Pillar is ranked 60th and went to college at UTEP.

Lewis enters the week with two titles to her name already this season and having held the No. 1 spot in the Rolex Rankings for four weeks before Inbee Park the week after her major championship win at The Kraft Nabisco Championship three weeks ago.

Stanford and Piller have both displayed excellent play this season, with Stanford boasting a third-place finish at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup while Piller tallied two top-10s in the first four events of the season.
