With the entire golf world taking a week off for the Players Championship, it’s time for everyone to get back to work, and back to the business of playing golf. The LPGA will move South to Alabama, and The Mobile Bay LPGA Classic. Stacy Lewis is set to defend her first victory in 2012 that began her run to the Rolex Player Of The Year honors.
With most of the top players on the LPGA Tour taking a break, there still promises to be a nice field of 144 players teeing it up at the The Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove on Thursday morning. With a total purse of $1.2 Million Dollars , and $180,000 winner’s share on the line, it will give some 28 rookies a chance to make a name for themselves. With all of the first-time winners on the PGA Tour this year, why not the LPGA as well?
This will be the fifth playing for this tournament which began in 2008, but was not played in 2009. Past champions include Angela Stanford in 2008, Si Ri Pak in 2010, Maria Hjorth in 2011, and Lewis last year.
Last year, Stacy Lewis used the Mobile Classic to kick-off what turned out to be a statement year for her career. She played all four rounds in the 60’s and fought off a Sunday charge by teenager, Lexi Thompson. Lewis finished up at -17 under par.
The Crossings Course at Magnolia Grove is a Robert Trent Jones design that is 6521 yards long, and plays to a par of 72. It is largely seeded throughout with Kentucky Bluegrass, and Bentgrass. The greens are Bermudagrass. The course was opened for play in 2009.
The Mobile Bay LPGA Classic will be played May 16-19 and will be featured on Golf Channel all four days. The first and second rounds will be on tape delay and will air 6:30-8:30 p.m. EST and aired live from 5-7 p.m. EST on Saturday and Sunday.
