Jessica Korda has a one-shot lead going into Saturday’s third round of The Mobile Bay LPGA Classic over LPGA Tour veteran, Karrie Webb. The 20 year-old from Bradenton,Florida has put two rounds in the books, without posting a bogey on her scorecard. She has come back from wrist injuries, and is at -13 under par in a tournament void of many of the LPGA stars who are taking a break this week.
Korda bested her first round 66 on Friday afternoon, and put a bogey-free -7 under par 65 on the board. The youngster has been spot on all year, and looking at the statistics for the first two rounds at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Magnolia Course, the only thing that jumps out is, she is doing everything well.
A big girl at 5’11”, Korda hits the ball with some authority. She is averaging 289 yards off the tee, and is hitting the fairway at a 25 of 28 clip. Although she needed a few more putts on Friday to get around the par 72 layout, she hit 17 of 18 greens in regulations. She just seems to have all phases of her game working this week.
“I feel really comfortable out here,” said Korda. “This is definitely one of the stops I wanted to come back to and I hope we can keep this event as long as possible out here because I really like it…I feel good. Today actually I didn’t have one shot where I was kind of kind of windstedded or anything so it was good, it’s definitely moving in the right direction.”
Unfortunately for Jessica is, she has a 38 time LPGA Champion, Karrie Webb lurking one-stroke back. The 38 year-old Webb had a rocky start on Thursday, but has recovered from the double bogey/bogey she made on the first and second holes in the first round. She went to +1 before making a birdie run that salvaged what could have been disaster. She shot herself back in contention on Friday with a bogey free, -9 under par 63.
Defending Mobile Bay Champ, Stacy Lewis begins play on Saturday, nine strokes back at -4 under par. She hasn’t been able to get her putter working this week, and is logically out of contention for a back-to-back win in Mobile.
Jessica Korda is currently ranked 46th on The Rolex list, and has three top 10 finishes in 2013. Her best finish was a T4 at The RR Donnelley Founders Cup. She finished T5 at The HSBC Women’s Championship, and a T6 at The LOTTE Championship. She had a T25 at the first LPGA Major, The Kraft Nabisco Championship, and has pocketed just shy of $224,000 this year. She turned pro in 2011, and has made just over $625,000 in her short career.
