Golf 2013: Andrew Dodt Makes Two Aces In Sweden

Matteo Manassero continues to lead the The Nordea Masters at The Bro Hof Slott Golf Course near Stockholm by two shots over Mikko Ilonen from Finland, but the real fireworks came from 27 year-old Andrew Dodt from Australia. Dodt started the second round Friday on the back nine, and aced his second hole of the day, the 175 yard par three 11th hole. When he got to the front nine, he did it again at the 208 yard par three seventh hole.

Andrew Dodt became the first player in European Tour history to get two hole-in-ones on the same round. It was done in 2006 on the PGA Tour by Yusaku Miyazato at The Reno-Tahoe Open. The chances of this ever happening are 67,000,000 to one. Fortunately for Dodt, the seven under par 67 came at a good time, and vaulted him ahead of the cut line. After an opening round 77 on Thursday, he was probably looking at an early flight home. Now, at -2 under par for a total, he will more than likely play on the weekend.

Manassero had to hold off some big charges to maintain his lead. Mikko Ilonen and Peter Whiteford, from Scotland both shot 63’s on Friday to keep him honest. The young Italian, who won the BMW PGA Championship last week in England carded a 65 to maintain his lead.

Mikko Ilonen converted nine birdies (including four twos) on his way to a superb bogey free round of 63. Looking at his Genworth Statistics over the first two rounds, the 33 year old golfer from Finland is driving the ball long and straight off the tee and he is hitting lots of greens in regulation, plus his scrambling and putting is also very strong. With two 2nd place finishes from his last four starts (and a 12th last week at Wentworth), Mikko’s third European Tour win is surely just around the corner.

Peter Whiteford fired one eagle and five birdies over his final seven holes today for a second round 63. Looking at his Genworth Tournament Statistics, the 32 year old Scotsman has hit 20/26 fairways and 24/36 greens in regulation, plus he has scrambled 9/12 times for par and taken just 50 putts in total. Note that the Par 5 holes are playing their part with the three leading players all ranking 2nd for Par 5 Scoring.
