Update: Play has been suspended for the second time today at 6:10pm ET.
Play has been suspended at 8:36am local time at the 2013 US Open from the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, PA with severe storms expected to start moving through just after 9am on Thursday morning.
One player who won’t be happy with the delay is Englishman, Ian Pouler. Starting his round on the 11th hole, Poulter opened with three birdies in his first three holes and currently leads the tournament from a group of players at -2 including Nicolas Colsaerts, Tim Clark, Charles Schwartzel and Charley Hoffman.
Phil Mickelson who only arrived at the course 90 minutes before his tee-time after returning home to see his daughter’s graduation overcame a 3-putt bogey on his first hole with a birdie on the Par 3, 13th hole (his third) to sit at even par for the tournament after 5 holes.
The storms are expected to bring large hail, lightning, strong winds and flooding rain with play unlikely to resume again until Friday morning.
