Well it was a long time in the making, but it made the victory that much sweeter as Ken Duke secured his first PGA Tour victory defeating Chris Stroud on the second playoff hole to win the 2013 Travelers Championship.
Duke looked home after shooting a final round of -4 (66) but Stroud remarkably chipped in from off the green on the 72nd hole for birdie to force the playoff.
With both players searching for their first win, they squared the first playoff hole with pars before Duke stiffed his sand wedge approach to the 18th green setting up a 2-foot birdie putt which was enough for victory.
“I worked hard, I have knocked on the door a lot and here we are,” Duke said “That’s what it’s all about.”
Bubba Watson held the lead on the back nine, but a triple bogey on the Par 3, 16th hole quickly diminished any title aspirations he had, as once again his mental game got the better of him.
The Travelers Championship again tossed up another first time winner, and it’s a timely one for the 44-year-old, in a career defining performance.
