I’m counting down to the 13th playing of The Solheim Cup, August 16-18, at the Colorado Golf Club in Parker, Colorado. In 33 days and 21 hours as I write this post, Team USA and Team Europe, 24 of the best in women’s golf, will face off in a series of two-player matches that will keep me on the edge of my seat for 3 days! I’m monitoring the Twitter accounts for Captains Meg Mallon’s (Team USA) and Liselotte Neumann’s (Team Europe) final announcements.
There’s still a lot of women’s pro golf to be played before Team USA and Team Europe are finalized and announced in early August. The Manulife Financial LPGA Classic, the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and O-I, and the RIHOC Women’s British Open will all provide opportunities for players to add to their current Solheim Cup points and impress the team captains, who both have discretionary picks.
At this point, Stacy Lewis leads the Team USA field in points, followed by Paula Creamer, Kristie Kerr, Angela Stanford, Brittany Lincicome, Jessica Korda, Lexi Thompson and Brittany Lang. Yet to come are the two highest ranked Americans not already on the team and two players who will be Captain Meg Mallon’s personal choices. What a team!
The Americans will face off against a Team Europe that will likely include at least 4 of the following: Suzann Petterson (Norway), Catriona Matthew (Scotland), Carlota Cignda (Spain), Carolina Masson (Germany), Azahara Munoz (Spain), Beatriz Ricari (Spain), and Karine Icher (France).
The Americans have never lost the Solheim on home soil but it’s no give-away this year. The Europeans currently control the Cup and are not going to easily relinquish it. There’s only a week break between the British Women’s Open and the Solheim, and the Solheim will be played at relatively high altitude, 5900 feel ASL. Players are going to be forced to dig deep into their physical and mental reserves to muster the resources they need to win.
Match play is a format that can and does turn on a dime, often more than once or twice over the course of 3 days. I’m looking forward to some fast golf, breathtaking putts, and fierce competition!
