The Waste Management Phoenix Open is always one of my favorite golf tournaments on the PGA Tour schedule. It is the only regular Tour Stop that takes on the persona of a Ryder Cup match. It’s the one week of the year that pro’s don’t complain about noise, and people talking during their backswing, and they grip it and rip it anyway. The highlight of the event is the par 3 sixteenth hole where Caddies race from the tee box to the green. The PGA has banned the races in the future, and taken all the fun out of the event.
I seems the PGA is taking a page out of the NFL(No Fun League) book on how to discourage fans from coming to an event by taking the fun out of it. The 2014 edition of the Phoenix Open will surely have noise in the arena style stadium around the entire hole, but there will be no caddie races.
The caddie races were discovered by accident when caddies found out the reason fans would cheer while they walked to the green was that fans were betting on which one would reach the green first. When they found out, it became a competitive race for most in order to give fans what they came for, some fun.
I’ve supplied one of the better races in the past for you to watch. You can make up your mind if it presents a danger to the caddies who participate.
