Nick Watney is the defending champion when 123 professional golfers tee it up on Thursday morning to get the 2013 FedEx Cup Championships underway. The city of New York, and the Statue of Liberty will serve as background when action begins at Liberty Country Club, which was built on a New Jersey landfill along the Hudson River. The winner at this 7346 yard par 70 layout will definitely have to earn the nearly $1.5 million dollar paycheck, and the 2500 FedEx Points.
Tiger Woods will lead the field to the green flag to get the action underway with his 733 point lead over number two, Matt Kuchar. Two previous champions, including 2011, and 2012 champions, Bill Haas, and Brandt Snedeker round out the top five that includes Phil Mickelson.
Liberty Country Club was opened in 2006, and designed by Tom Kite, and Bob Cupp. It became the second part of the Barclays rotation after Westchester was dropped in 2009. The course has tricky crosswind and greens that will demand the full attention of all players. The course record 64 was set by Dustin Johnson in the fourth round of the 2009 playoffs.
PGATour.com will provide live streaming for the first two rounds from 8AM to 6PM on Thursday and Friday. TELEVISION: Thursday-Friday, 3-6 p.m. ET (Golf Channel). Saturday, 1-2:30 p.m. (GC), 3-6 p.m. (CBS). Sunday, noon-1:30 p.m. (GC), 2-6 p.m. (CBS). All times are Eastern Daylight Time(EDT).
Some of the interesting pairings for Thursday and Friday action will see Tiger Woods, Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker tee it up on the back nine Thursday at 8:16 AM. That will put this group on the first tee for Friday’s prime-time coverage. Just prior to the featured group at 8:06 AM Thursday, rookie phenom, Jordan Spieth will tee it up with US Open Champ, Justin Rose, and the hottest player on both tours, Henrik Stenson.
Prime-time coverage on Thursday will feature Phil Mickelson, 2011 FedEx Champ, Bill Haas, and Billy Horschel. 2013 Masters Champ, Adam Scott will play alongside Keegan Bradley, and New Orleans champ, Boo Weekly who tee up at 12:06, just prior to the Mickelson group.
Newly crowned Wyndham Champion, Patrick Reed will get out early on Thursday morning, teeing it up on the first hole at 8:16 AM with Hunter Mahan, and Jim Furyk. It appears that the PGA has paired newcomers with grizzled veterans for the first two rounds of this event. I can’t wait for this thing to get started. It’s going to be good.
