With most of the first round in the books on Friday morning, it appears that Kevin Stadler will be your 18 hole leader at The Barclays. The 33 year-old son of Craig Stadler(The Walrus) fired a bogey free seven under par 64 at Liberty National GC on Thursday afternoon to carry the overnight lead with a one-shot advantage over Henrik Stenson, Ryan Palmer, and Camilo Villegas.
Stadler got hot after the six hours worth of rain delays and battled a relentless Villegas birdie for birdie. Villegas finally made a couple of bogeys late in the day trying to get to the clubhouse, but Stadler would settle for pars down the stretch and carded the 64 at Liberty Golf Club. Stadler is ranked 87th on the FedEx points list, and if he could hang on for a victory, would be in second place just behind Tiger Woods.
The USC grad, who was born in Reno, and currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona has not had a stellar year on the PGA Tour. He only has two top ten finishes, and three top 25′s. He has missed eight cuts in 2013, the last coming last weeks Wyndham Championship. His best finish on the year was a third place finish at Pebble Beach.
Stadler has four victories on the Web.com Tour, and two international victories, his last coming at the 2006 Johnnie Walker Classic. He has never lived up to his fathers mark, Craig Stadler had 13 PGA Tour victories including the 1982 Masters. Kevin Stadler will tee off on Friday just after 4PM.
