With the end of Deutsche Bank Championship, Presidents Cup Captain Fred Couples will be faced with some hard decisions. The automatic qualifying for the October event scheduled to get underway at Muirfield Village in early October will be over, and it will be his turn to make his two Captains Picks. There are some big names who have not yet qualified, and the problem is, there are more than two who are yet to be automatically included in the tournament.
Couples will be in Canada this week playing in The Shaw Charity Classic, and will need some help from his assistant captains for input before he makes his September 4th selections. Davis Love III and Jay Haas are the assistants, and we saw who Davis selected last September for the Ryder Cup.
Zach Johnson currently holds the 10th position, with Steve Stricker just outside the top ten in 11th place. Johnson, and Stricker both took last weeks Barclays Championship off due to commitments away from the golf course. The other interesting possibility that looms for Captain Freddie is the status of his number one player.
We all saw last weekend when Tiger Woods withered in pain after certain shots. One would think Tiger will be all better within the next month, but there are only two open dates for him to rest. The week between the Deutsche Bank, and the BMW, and the one week lag after the Tour Championship.
Unlike last year, when the Ryder Cup was played the week after the Tour ending championship, they will get a week to rest up this year prior to the Presidents Cup. One still has to wonder if Tiger will be ready by then to perform on this level.
The interesting names that have yet to qualify for this year’s event are Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk, Bubba Watson, and Rickie Fowler currently at 17th. One of the names that can be heard around broadcasts is rookie, Jordan Spieth. Spieth has been playing well, but the President’s Cup qualifying is a two-year process, and Spieth has only been around this summer and is currently in 26th position.
There are some other fist-time winners in 2013 who were playing pretty well that I haven’t mentionted like Billy Horschel, D.A. Points, and Michael Thompson. All have won tournaments this year, but are behind the incumbents who are in on points. Who doesn’t think Billy Ho wouldn’t get fired up for this competition.
I’m sure glad this decision is on Fred Couples, and am very anxious to see who he adds to the line-up that will take on Nick Price, and his international team. Nick will have two picks as well, and he has an injury problem to deal with in Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen isn’t expected to return until the Race To Dubai playoffs start in late October.
After all, they watched as Team Europe came here to take back the Ryder Cup, as well as the Solheim Cup, and will think it is going to be an easy task. We need to stand tall this year, and show the world they can’t continue to beat us like a drum without some revenge.
