Labor Day weekend is always a magical time for sports fans. Not only is the college football season getting underway with the NFL just around the corner, but the PGA Golf season is winding down and is in the middle of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Baseball teams are in pennant races, and fall is in the air. I can smell it here in the mountains. It’s summer’s last fling before we settle into our fall activities. Back to work, back to school.
The Deutsche Bank tees up on Friday morning for the second installment of the Fed Ex Cup playoffs. 100 of the word’s best golfers hit the course at TPC Boston for a share of a huge purse, and a ton of FedEx points. The winner will pocket 2500 points, and a cool $1.4 Million Dollars when a champion is crowned on Monday afternoon. The LPGA, and Web.com tour all teed off on Thursday, but a rare Friday start on the PGA Tour will feature Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Adam Scott. The top three players in the world haven’t been paired in the first two rounds since the 2008 US Open, Tiger’s last major championship.
Tiger Woods was only scheduled to play nine holes during the Thursday ProAm, but felt good enough to get in 18. I wouldn’t count the world’s number one player out just yet. Can his back hold up throughout the playoffs? I think with the proper treatment and regimen, he’s good to go.
The Deutsche Bank Championship is the last opportunity for players gain points for the Presidents Cup. Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker are the players who are on the bubble at the 10th and 11th position, and both were the only two players to miss the Barclays last week. Team USA Captain, Fred Couples will not be at TPC Boston this week, so he will be leaning on asst. Captain, Davis Love III to keep an eye out for potential Captains Picks. They have to take Jordan Spieth….don’t they?
You had to know Matt Every would be a Tim Tebow fan, he’s a Gator! I’m guessing Billy Horschel is one as well. Tim Tebow helped his cause with the Patriots on Thursday night with a 52 yard touchdown pass. Bill Belichick has to keep Tim Tebow…right?
