In an announcement on The Golf Channel Wednesday afternoon, both Presidents Cup Captains have made their picks, and the teams are set when action gets underway at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio on October 3rd. Both Fred Couples, and Nick Price had quite a pool of players to pick from, and some names were left off the teams, but captains only get two picks at The Presidents Cup.
Nick Price went first, and his picks were Australian, Marc Leishman, and fellow Zimbabwan, Brendon DeJong. These were the two players I had projected in my Around The Links segment on Wednesday morning. South African Tim Clark was the odd man out for 2013, and Price indicated that the reason he didn’t pick the veteran was his lack of length off of the tee. He felt that would be a problem at Muirfield.
Fred Couples made his picks, and added Webb Simpson, who was beaten out on the last two holes at The Deutsche Bank by Zach Johnson, and the great tournament played by Steve Stricker. Stricker wanted to play his way on the team, and didn’t want to be a Captain’s Pick. The last pick for Team USA was Jordan Spieth.
I was afraid that Couples would go with the experience, and take Jim Furyk, but he surprised me by taking the best player for the position, and that was Jordan Spieth. The Webb Simpson pick was the big surprise for me, but Fred indicated that all along, Simpson would be on the team whether he was in 9th place, or 11th place. He ended up in 11th place, and is now part of Team USA.
The Line up:
|Brendon de Jonge|
I was pleased with the picks by both captains, and can’t wait for the action to begin. Team USA has a 7-1-1 record in this event, and you expect the International team to fight hard this year to make this a viable event. This is going to be good!!
