Defending champion Jonas Blixt will lead 132 golfers to the start of the 2013-2014 PGA Season opener at the Frys.com Open when it gets underway on Thursday morning. The CordeValle Golf Course in San Martin, California will play host to the first tournament of the new season under the new format, and players will be awarded FedEx Cup Points for their efforts. Three Presidents Cup competitors will tee it up on the 7368 yard Robert Trent Jones Jr. course located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of beautiful Northern California. The 2013-2014 season will usher in the new 2014 season that starts on Maui in January, after the holiday break.
With 500 FedEx Cup points on the line, this event gives the younger players, and rookies who earned their PGA Tour cards from the Web.com playoff to get a head start on the season before the regulars come back in January.
Hideki Matsuyama, Angel Cabrera, and Marc Leishman from the Presidents Cup will all be on hand when the action begins on Thursday. The young star from Japan is the highest world ranked player in the field, coming in at number 30. All four winners in the Web.com playoffs, Trevor Immelman, Andy Svoboda, Seung-Yul Noh and Chesson Hadleywill be in the field as well.
The field will also include some first-time winners during the 2013 season. Billy Horschel, John Merrick, and eleven major champions, with five former Players Champions. They include, Retief Goosen, Stewart Cink, Trevor Immelman, and Camillo Villegas.
The Frys.com Open will be broadcast on the Golf Channel for all four rounds, and will be on from 5-8 PM daily, beginning on Thursday afternoon.
