It’s a nasty morning in the mountains with snow, and sleet in the forecast, my Dallas Cowboys lost to the Philadelphia Eagles last night, and miss the playoffs yet again, but there is good news today. Two of the most recognizable athletes on the planet share a common day. A birthday! Happy Birthday to Tiger Woods and Lebron James.
Only nine years separate these two icons, but each are without doubt the leaders in their respective sports. LeBron is seeking his third NBA Championship, and Tiger his 15th major. He still needs four majors to catch Jack Nicklaus, and five to beat the record he covets more than any other.
Tiger hasn’t won a major since the 2008 when he won the US Open at Torrey Pines, but 2014 could set up nicely for number 15. Three of the majors this year are at venues where Tiger has previously won a major.
Tiger’s last Masters win came in 2005 at Augusta National, he won the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, and his final Open Championship came in 2006 at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course. All three are on the agenda for 2014 with only the US Open being at a venue where Tiger hasn’t won a major.
We should see Tiger Woods a couple of times in January. He will be teeing it up at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on January 16th, and again the following week at Torrey Pines for the Farmers Insurance Open where he won his last major, and where he won the first of five tournaments in 2013.
LeBron James and his division leading Miami Heat take on the Denver Nuggets tonight at the Pepsi Center in Denver. The game tips off at 9:00 PM Eastern Time. The Heat are 23 and 7 on the season, and trail the surging Indiana Pacers by a game and a half in the Eastern Conference.
Happy Birthday Tiger and LeBron
