Defending Champion Louis Oosthuizen leads a field of 36 winners on the European Tour into Durban South Africa for the 2014 Volvo Golf Champions Tournament. The 2014 kick-off event is the European Tour’s version of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. Players are 2013 winners on the tour, and former champions.
There are 18 nationalities represented on the entry list with South Africa boasting the highest number of players. The seven South African stars include defending Champion and winner of the 2010 Open Championship, Louis Oosthuizen, 2011 Masters Champion and recent winner of the Alfred Dunhill Championship Charl Schwartzel, 2012 Champion Branden Grace, Darren Fichardt, Dawie Ven der Walt, Thomas Aiken and six-time European Tour winner Richard Sterne.
The Durban Country Club is a 6689 yard golf course located in the KwaZulu Province of South Africa, and plays to a par of 72. The course, considered one of the finest in South Africa, was designed by George Waterman and Lawrie B Waters and opened for play in 1922.
One of the neat things to watch here is the abundance of wildlife around the golf course, especially monkeys.
Louis Oosthuizen beat Scott Jamieson last year by one stroke, and Thai star, Tongchai Jaidee by two. Padraig Harrington finished fourth, four shots off the pace.
The only American in the field will be 24 year-old Peter Uihlein. The 64th ranked Uihlein won in Portugal last year, and is attempting to gain PGA Tour access by playing as a regular on the European Tour.
The Volvo Championship will provide an early look at some of the finest players on the European Tour as they prepare for the HSBC Golf Championships next week. Players are also playing for valuable Ryder Cup points as well as Race To Dubai Points.
This should be a great kick-off for the 2014 season, and will be televised locally on the Golf Channel.
