You would think that a guy with three wins on the year, and a 757 point lead in the Fed Ex Cup standings would take some me time. But 35 year-old Jimmy Walker has spent too many years trying to get to the top, and now that he’s there, doesn’t want to stop. After surviving the weather last week at Carmel, the University of Baylor Grad made the trip down the coast to LA and will compete in The Northern Trust Open this week at Riviera Country Club.
Walker, who is now ranked 24th in the OWGR, tees it up this week alongside 30 of the world’s top 50 golfers at this iconic old golf course in Pacific Palisades, where the movie stars play golf, just outside of Hollywood. Fresh off of his win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am on Sunday, Jimmy Walker will attempt to make it two in a row at Riviera.
Riviera Country Club was designed by George Thomas, and opened in 1927. The course is a 7349 yard layout, and plays to a par of 71. It is one of two golf courses that has the nickname “Hogan’s Alley”. It started hosting the LA Open in 1929, and Ben Hogan won thee times in an 18 month span which included the 1948 US Open. The other “Hogan’s Alley” is Colonial, in Ft. Worth.
John Merrick will defend his only PGA Tour win when action gets underway on Thursday. Merrick earned his first career PGA Tour win at the Northern Trust Open, beating Charlie Beljan on Riviera’s famous 10th hole, the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.
