After spending the 2013 season dealing with injuries, 2010 Open Champion, Louis Oosthuizen will make his 2014 PGA Tour debut at the Northern Trust Open on Thursday. The popular South African with the sweet swing will play alongside 2012 Masters Champ Bubba Watson, and 2013 Tampa Bay Champion, Kevin Streelman when action gets underway at the Riviera Country Club on Thursday afternoon.
The 31 year-old from Mossel Bay, South Africa had to withdraw from the Open Championship last July at Muirfield because of reoccurring back pains, but returned in the fall for the Race To Dubai playoff run. It was apparent last season that Oosthuizen was having physical issues when he missed the cut at Augusta after losing in a playoff the previous year to Bubba Watson’s miracle nine-iron shot.
Oosthuizen continued to try to play through the pain, but after withdrawing from the Byron Nelson Championship, and the US Open you could see it was only a matter of time until he would have to take some time to heal. That decision came at Muirfield.
Since returning to a full schedule, Oosthuizen finished the 2013 European Tour season with a 59th place finish at the BMW Masters, and a T32 at the DP World Tour Championship in the Race To Dubai finale’. He got the 2014 season started with a win in the Volvo Championship at the Durban Country Club, in South Africa.
Louis Oosthuizen is currently in third place in Race To Dubai points following his victory in Durban, but has fell to 34th in Official World Golf Rankings(OWGR) due to the injuries in 2013. After watching him play in South Africa, it looks like we will see him back to full strength as the PGA Tour gets set to move on to Florida in a couple of weeks.
As he comes into Southern California with a battle-tested win on his golf game this week, he could be a factor at Riviera come Sunday afternoon. He has the game to compete on this Tour, as we saw at the 2012 Masters, and can play with the best the tour has to offer.
