Champions Tour: Tom Watson hits incredible recovery shot in round one of the Toshiba Classic

In the first round of the Toshiba Classic, Tom Watson played a remarkable shot with his back to the green on the par-3 eighth hole.  The one-handed recovery shot was necessary because of the ball’s proximity to a large palm tree.  The ball finished a couple feet from the hole, and you can view the shot below.  Video is courtesy of PGATour.com:

Watson finished the first round at even-par, eight strokes behind the leader, Bernhard Langer.

Langer said he was pleased with every club in his bag after a flawless 63 that included eight birdies and no bogies.  Going back to last season, Langer has shot under-par in 19 of 20 rounds.

Fred Couples, Chien Soon Lu, and Jeff Hart are tied for second place at six-under par.

Couples and Hart represent the broad spectrum of players on the Champions Tour.  Couples relies on his power while Hart plays strategically because he does not hit the ball a long way.  A classic course like Newport Beach Country Club allows the two players to compete, and they both took advantage of the 6,600 yard layout in the first round.

The players begin teeing off at 11:30 am PST.  The weather forecast is superb, so expect more low scores in round two.
