Tiger Woods posted on his website today that he will not be able to play in Arnie’s Tournament at Bay Hill. Tiger, who has won the event a record 8 times previously, has been battling back spasms in recent weeks. The pain, which initially cropped up at the Honda Classic, caused him to withdraw after 13 holes on Sunday. He seemed to be in better shape the following week at the WGC-Cadillac Championship, but after putting himself in contention, he was visibly dealing with some discomfort on his way to a final round 78.
It’s too early to know about the Masters, and I will continue to be evaluated and work closely with my doctors
He added later in the post that “It’s too early to know about the Masters”, but this certainly casts a shadow of doubt on the odds that he tees it up at Augusta. Even at less than 100%, Tiger is a threat to take home another Green Jacket; but on a course as difficult and demanding as Augusta, any flare ups in the back can spell doom.
