I remember 1982, and the only major championship 60 year-old Craig Stadler would win in his long career. The elder Stadler has continued to play in The Masters year-after-year waiting for his son Kevin Stadler to qualify for a trip to Augusta. On Super Bowl Sunday it happened in Phoenix when Bubba Watson opened the door on the 18th hole at TPC Scottsdale to let the youngster qualify for his first Masters.
It wasn’t pretty for the former Masters Champ, as he struggled to a 10 over par 82 round on Thursday. He is likely going to play in his final Masters on Friday, and his last round at Augusta with his son. Even with the projected cut at 5 over par, Craig would need a stellar round of Friday to make the weekend, and from an early look at the leaderboard, Augusta isn’t yielding many low scores this morning. With a little wind, it will more than likely get worse as the couple tee off just before noon.
The younger Stadler had a nice round on Thursday, shooting a -2 under par 70 and barring a meltdown on Friday, should get his first taste of a weekend at Augusta. It will be sad, but time does move on, and he did get to do one thing no one in history has ever done. and that is play in the Masters with his dad. All he needs now is a Green Jacket like his dad’s.
That is one of the reasons I love sports, and a big reason I love this sport!
