Pablo Larrazabal Survives Killer Hornets At Maybank Malaysia Open

After starting his day on the back-nine at the Maybank Malaysia Open on Friday afternoon, Spaniard, Pablo Larrazabal encountered more than bunkers and fast greens on the front nine at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. After hitting his tee shot to the right of a bunker on the 5th hole(his 14th of the day) and chipping out, the 30 year-old from Barcelona was attacked by hornets.

After jumping into a pond to thwart the attack, Larrazabal went on to birdie the par five, and picked up another at seven. He would shoot a 68 on the day and ending with a -2 under par total, 11 shots off the blistering pace set by Lee Westwood. His opening round 74 put him in a hole, but the recovery in the second round gets him into the weekend with a chance for a nice paycheck.

“I hit my tee shot just right of the bunker and chipped it out quite well,” Larrazábal said.

“So I’m walking along and suddenly I felt something on my nose. I swatted it away and suddenly…they were not bees, they were three times the size of bees.

“They were huge and like 30 or 40 of them started to attack me big time. I didn’t know what to do. My caddie told me to run, so I start running like a crazy guy, but the hornets were still there, so the other players told me to jump in the lake.

Pablo Larrazabal beat Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson a few months back to win in Abu Dhabi. Larrazabal has three wins on the European Tour with the win in Abu Dhabi. He is ranked 65th in the world, and is currently 20th in the Race To Dubai.
