Weather Continues To Hold Up The 2014 St. Jude Classic

It should be moving day at The FedEx St. Jude Classic, but some players including five-time major champion Phil Mickelson haven’t even teed off their second round at TPC Southwind at this point. The weather continues to be the story in Memphis, and it doesn’t look to get any better through the weekend with US Open festivities getting under way on Monday in Pinehurst.

With two solid rounds in the books and a six-shot lead, it is doubtful that Ben Crane will see any action on Saturday. Crane has 36 holes in the books, and even with everyone teeing off at 7AM local time on Saturday, it is doubtful that they will be able to start the third round before Sunday morning.

More rain, and thunderstorms are forecasted in the South Memphis area to begin around four in the afternoon. This will put a real damper on players who are eager to get a couple of practice rounds in at Pinehurst before the action begins on Thursday.

With the top 60 players in the world having automatic qualification to the US Open, the finish at The St. Jude, and the Lyoness Open going on in Europe, can still mean hope for some of the players in the field to punch their tickets to Pinehurst.

Phil Mickelson shot a respectful three under par 67 on Thursday, but was on the first tee Friday afternoon when the horn was sounded to suspend play for the second time at 2:15 local time. Play was never resumed, and Phil will begin his second round on Saturday morning.

It’s my opinion that at some point today, tournament officials at The FedEx St. Jude Classic need to take a hard look at shortening this event to 54 holes so people can get on to Pinehurst for next weeks US Open. The weather doesn’t look like it is going to cooperate, so let’s pull the plug and get it finished on Sunday afternoon.
