Rory McIlroy took a queue from Phil Mickelson and decided to play in the Scotish Open the week prior to teeing it up in The Open Championship. The Northern Irishmen of course wanting to produce the same results as Mickelson’s ‘UK Double’ winning both the Scottish Open and Open Championship in back-to-back weeks.
He is off to a rousing start as the two-time major winner set the course record in round one at Royal Aberdeen with a 7-under, 64.
Though his score is what should be catching the headlines so far in Scotland — It was a shot that McIlroy hit on the par-4, 13th that has everyone on social media a buzz this morning.
On the 13th hole, McIlroy uncorked a powerful 436 yard drive. Yes, that is not a typo. He hit it 436 yards and drove the green on the par-4. Check out the video below courtesy of Golf Channel.
Yes the hole was playing down wind. Yes the hole is slightly down hill and yes this is links golf. However, you still have to hit the ball with some serious power right on the screws to even think about putting the ball on the green of a 436 yard par-4.
Word on social media is that after his round, McIlroy told Ian Poulter, who was in the group ahead, it was a 3-wood.
Oh and by the way — He made a two putt birdie.
