Although Henrick Stenson carded an Even par opening round at Royal Liverpool in The Open Championship, putting him six shots off the lead of Rory McIlroy. All was not well on course today for Stenson.
After finding trouble left off the tee on No. 17, the Swede failed to get his ball out of the thick rough with his second shot.
In a move channeling his inner Bo Jackson, Stenson snapped his gap wedge over his knee before calmly handing the now two-piece club to his caddy. He would card a bogey on the hole before parring No. 18 to close his opening round at Even par.
Stenson, who was playing along side Tiger Woods in his opening round, joked in his interview with the Daily Mail how Woods was nervous teeing it up with him on Thursday.
“I think it would have been a lot of sleepless nights for him as of late,” Stenson said. “When did the draw come out? He looked tired didn’t he?”
The No. 2 ranked player in the world will undoubtedly be facing a fine from both the PGA Tour and R&A after this incident.
