While we’re waiting for the second round of the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning & I-O to unfold I thought it might be fun to take a lookback at some of the great shots LPGA golfers delivered at Tour events during May and June. Beginning with the North Texas LPGA Shootout and ending with the WalMart NW Arkansas Championship, the lead-up to the US Women’s Open and the RICOH Women’s British Open involved some splendid golf.
I often forget that there’s terrific golf being played below the top of the leaderboard until Lizette Salas claims her first pro victory at the Kingsmill Championship or Mo Martin seizes the moment at the RICOH Women’s British Open. Then I remember that the future champions are often playing outside the Golf Channel spotlight.
These are some memorable shots you may have missed the first time around:
Perhaps Cristie’s Kerr’s ace on the par-3 6th hole at Highland Meadows yesterday will make it into the next LPGA look-back and surely we’ll be able to relive Might Mo’s spectacular second shot on the 72nd hole at Royal Birkdale, along with the little celebratory dance that followed!
For the moment, we’re focused on Laura Diaz, the fifteen-year Tour veteran who carded a career-low of 62 yesterday to grab a healthy four shot overnight lead at the Marathon Classic. Is it possible that a second journeywoman will join the 2014 LPGA circle of champions?
Diaz has been winless for twelve years. Her best 2014 finish to date came at the ShopRite LPGA Classic in May with a T24th and she’s missed the cut in six of the eleven events she’s entered this year.
But whether Diaz can hold the lead or not, she delivered a splendid first round on Thursday and I’m betting there will more splendid rounds played out on Friday at the Marathon Classic.
Golf Channel will begin coverage of the Marathon Classic second round in progress at 3pm on Friday, July 18 and I’ll provide updates as well here at ProGolfNow.
