2014-2015 Frys.com Open Fantasy Sleeper Picks

If you are a golf fan or a fantasy golf fan, you really have to love the PGA Tour off-season. On the PGA Tour there is no waiting around. The Tour Championship just ended about a month ago and the Ryder Cup ended about two weeks ago and now the first event of the 2014-2015 year is upon us this week.

The Frys.com Open is a weak field, but it’s stronger than usual. Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker are making their tournament debuts, Jimmy Walker is defending his Frys.com Open title, Hideki Matsuyama is here, and Ryder Cup participants Hunter Mahan and Lee Westwood are in Napa, California as well.

So, it’s not an utterly terrible field. There are plenty of stars and it should be interesting as the Frys.com Open is being held at the Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course which is the first time it will host the Frys.com Open. A lot of uncertainty this week with no course history to go on, but the course is pretty long and should favor longer hitters.

As is the case with some of these less prestigious tournaments, putting may not be the highest priority. Anywhere on the green should be good and even golfers that struggle with the flat stick should have success. So, what I’m looking for are long hitters, solid ball strikers, and all-around young, talented players.

Looking at the fantasy cap I was surprised at the wide range of salaries. Graham DeLaet and Brooks Koepka were more expensive than I thought they would be and a couple of golfers I have written down below I’m surprised they were below the average.

Alright, I think we’ve talked enough let’s get into the fantasy sleeper picks here at the 2014-2015 Frys.com Open.

Jason Kokrak– Look out for Jason Kokrak this year. From October to May Kokrak had a very quality year going. Unfortunately, Kokrak lost two months in the year due to injury. He came back in August for the PGA Championship and struggled. But, he did qualify for two playoff events before his year ended.

His last event of the year was at Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship where he finished T-16. That’s an encouraging sign as it looks as though he’s healthy. I’m looking for Kokrak to have a real big year this year and for the Frys.com Open I believe Kokrak will be in contention on Sunday. He’s a great value play.

Jhonatthan Vegas– Jhonatthan Vegas is a boom or bust player. One week he’ll finish in the top ten and the next he’ll miss the cut. But, last year, in his first ten tournaments he made the cut in nine of those tournaments. In the weaker fields Vegas is a little bit more stable and I think he’s a nice value pick this week. Vegas should be able to compete with his length off the tee and if he could just make a couple putts he’ll be a legitimate contender this week.

Brendan Steele- If the PGA Tour had a season long fantasy golf game like other fantasy sports; I would look to pick Brendan Steele on my team late in the draft. During the “Fall Swing” Brendan Steele should be in contention week in and week out.

Plus, when the fields do toughen up as the season progresses, Steele is typically still hanging around making cuts and competing in some select tournaments. Steele would be a great value pick and this week he is the best pick in terms of value. Steele hits it a long way and is a real solid golfer all around.
