2014-15 PGA Tour Season: Featuring The Masters, The Players, and The WGC-Match Play

Of all the 2014-15 PGA Tour Season prediction articles we’ve done, this one was my favorite to do. This is one where there are a lot of meat and potatoes to dive into. We have the first major of the year, and you follow that up with the WGC-Accenture Match Play, and then you cap it off with The Players.

While the RBC Heritage and the Zurich Classic aren’t on that level, they are still fun tournaments to watch in their own right. This will be a five week stretch you definitely won’t want to miss. As always, if you’ve missed any of the previous prediction articles you can check them out here, here, and here.

April 6-12: Masters Tournament

Augusta National, Augusta, Georgia

Winner: Rory McIlroy

It’s really not a question of if Rory McIlroy will win the Masters, it’s more of a question of when will Rory McIlroy win the Masters. As we all, probably, know by now McIlroy came close to already owning a Green Jacket, but a collapse in 2011 ended those dreams. But, the ever resilient McIlroy bounced back and four years later he’s clearly the best golfer in the world with a U.S. Open, a British Open, and two PGA Championships on his resume.

So, I say, hey, why not next year? While I’d love to take Matt Kuchar or Lee Westwood in this spot, its just best to go with McIlroy because he is the best golfer in the world and his game sets up really well at Augusta.

April 13-19: RBC Heritage

Harbour Town GL, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

Winner: Rory Sabbatini

I’ve got Rory winning back-to-back tournaments. This time though at RBC Heritage I’m rolling with Rory Sabbatini winning. Sabbatini has been locked in at Harbour Town finishing T-9 in back-to-back years and in 2012 he finished T-17, 2010: T-14, and 2009: T-8. RBC Heritage isn’t a loaded field and Sabbatini’s game fits so well that he’s bound to wear the plaid jacket at the end of 72 holes.

April 20-26: Zurich Classic of New Orleans

TPC Louisiana, New Orleans, Louisiana

Winner: Cameron Tringale

For the last three years, the winner of the Zurich Classic have been some pretty significant names. Last year, Seung-Yul Noh won, Billy Horschel the year before, and Jason Dufner before that. Some very quality names. I think that theme will continue next year with Cameron Tringale winning.

Tringale is one of the better golfers to not have a PGA Tour win in his career. A young, talented golfer that went to school at Georgia Tech has had a solid resume at Louisiana.

Last year, Tringale finished T-17, in 2013 he did miss the cut by a shot, but in 2012 he finished T-7, and in 2011: T-18. Tringale is too good not to have a win and I think he gets at least one this year and I believe his best shot will be at the Zurich Classic.

April 27-May 3: WGC-Match Play Championship

TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, California

Winner: Patrick Reed

I think a young gun will win the WGC-Match Play this coming year. I could see Jordan Spieth, Harris English, Chris Kirk, Hideki Matsuyama, or Billy Horschel winning it, but I’m going to go with Patrick Reed. He showed that fire, that passion, and that swagger at the Ryder Cup that you need in a match play format.

May 4-10 PLAYERS Championship

TPC Sawgrass, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida

Winner: Justin Rose

The PLAYERS is an interesting tournament in a way that it is extremely difficult to predict. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone that doesn’t have any blimps on their resume here at The PLAYERS. This is a tournament where you can just about throw out course history because every year is wildly different. That’s what makes it so hard to predict.

With that said, I’m going with Justin Rose for the win. I think Rose is in line for a big year. He’s hitting his peak, he’s in his prime and for the next few years I’m anticipating Justin Rose will win a number of significant tournaments.

May 11-17: Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hollow Club, Charlotte, North Carolina

Winner: Webb Simpson

I’m just going with the safe, chalk pick here in Webb Simpson. Simpson is from the area, should play, and should play well.

We’ll leave it off here. This was a fun prediction article as we went through a number of quality tournaments. The next article I’m taking a golfer to win twice in a six week span, who’s that golfer? Keep checking in here at Pro Golf Now to find out.
