Athough Adam Scott has won The Commercial Bank Qatar Masters twice, no one has ever successfully defended a title at the Doha Golf Course. Sergio Garcia will give it a go this week in Doha. The 35 year-old Spaniard will get his 2015 season underway this week at the site of his only win on any tour since the Wyndham Championship in 2012.

Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia defeated Finland’s Mikko Ilonen last year in an epic playoff to win his first, and only Mother of Pearl Trophy. Garcia has finished in the top ten at the second stop on the Desert Swing four times, finishing second to Chris Wood in 2013, and lifting the trophy last year.

More from European tour

The popular Spaniard will be looking to make history this year by becoming the first in history to go back-to-back at this event.

"He said: “I want to play as well as I can and put up a good defence of my title. I’ve started my season in Qatar for the last few years, and I always enjoy coming back.“I came close to winning a few times, so it was nice to get over the line last year. I played really well on the last day to get into the play-off, then had to play really well all over again to beat Mikko. So I have some good memories, and hopefully they can inspire me to have another successful week.”"

It’s no secret that with 27 wins as a golf professional, eleven on the European Tour, and eight on the PGA Tour, Sergio Garcia has been somewhat of an under achiever since he came on the scene at the 1999 PGA Championship, where he picked up the first of two second place finishes in the year’s last major.

Success on the golf course occasionally come with success at home, and in your personal life. Sergio is traveling to Qatar this week with his fiancée’, Katharina Boehm while the couple plan their impending wedding.

Garcia is hoping that with the solid foundation he laid down in 2014, and getting his personal life in a happy place will show up as success on the golf course. He doesn’t write his goals on the back of his boarding passes like Rory McIlroy, but is planning to have a nice 2015 season.

"He said: “I just try to play the best I can whenever I tee up. You can’t win every week, but as long as I come away feeling I’ve given it my best shot, then I’m happy. I want to keep improving and keep getting more consistent, which I managed last year. If I can build on last season, I should be in for a good year.“Obviously I’d love to contend in the Majors again, and I do still think I can win one. I played pretty well in The Open last year, and that’s the one I feel I have my best chance of winning – and the one I’d love to win the most. But I’m not greedy, I’d love to win any Major – and hopefully more than one.”"

 The Commercial Bank Qatar Masters

The Commercial Bank has been the title sponsor for this event since 2006, have just signed a three-year extension, and will sponsor the Qatar Masters through the 2018 season.

As the mid-point stop on the European Tour’s Desert Swing, The Commercial Bank Qatar Masters has continued to increase in strong fields, and popularity.

This year, the event will field seven players out of the top 50 in Official World Golf Rankings, and three players inside the top ten. Henrik Stenson number two, Justin Rose at number five, and Garcia at number six.

South African, Charl Schwartzel with last year’s runner-up, Mikko Ilonen, and Ryder Cup star, Stephen Gallacher also represent a top fifty field that should guarantee a strong finish on Sunday afternoon.

Other big names in Qatar this week include major winners, Ernie Els, Robert Karlsson, and Y.E. Yang. Last weeks winner at Abu Dhabi, Frenchman, Gary Stal will tee it up on Thursday as well.
